Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence Signs
Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence.
It was recently Domestic Violence Awareness month and with the Holidays coming up, we thought it would be an important topic to revisit.
Domestic violence can affect every person differently, but one thing is for sure: It impacts everyone both physically and psychologically and it can happen to anyone, from any social, educational or financial background.
Red flags may not always be noticeable, but they can give valuable clues if someone is being mistreated. Domestic abuse can create a sense of helplessness or despair and feel like never being able to escape the control of the abuser. Someone who used to be outgoing and cheerful could suddenly become withdrawn and quiet.
Physical signs can include:
Injuries like bruises, burns, or fractures with inconsistent explanations
Infants that haven’t started walking yet with any kind of injury
A child under age 4 with bruises to their torso, ears, or neck
Failure to gain weights or dramatic sudden weight gain
Emotional signs of abuse include:
Low self-esteem
Seeming fearful
Agitation or anxiety
Sleep problems
Depression
Changes in behavior you may notice:
Isolation from friends and family
Dropping out of activities they used to enjoy
Unexplained abdominal pain
Suddenly wetting the bed again
Running away
Aggressive behavior
It is not always easy to recognize when a child has been abused. Kids are often afraid to tell anyone and may think they are the ones to blame.
But a child in that situation needs urgent support and treatment.
If you think your child has been a victim of abuse, get help immediately - either through your pediatrician or a local protective agency. There are many resources and services available who can help in a crisis and cover a variety of needs.
Please remember: You are not alone. 💜
