Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C)

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (or MIS-C) occurs when different parts of the body, like the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or even tummy, become inflamed. While we don’t know for sure what causes MIS-C, it has been linked to COVID-19 infection!

In the States, most children with MIS-C are between 3-12 years old & of Black & Latino descent. Most symptoms appear between 2-6 weeks after COVID-19 infection.

While MIS-C is rare and most kids eventually get better with proper medical care, some do get worse rather quickly & it can be life-threatening!

Some of the signs and symptoms of MIS-C include:

  • Fever (24 hours or longer)

  • Vomiting & diarrhea

  • Stomach pains

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Rapid heartbeat & fast breathing

  • Bloodshot eyes

  • Skin rash

  • Redness/swelling of the hands & feet

  • Redness/swelling of the lips & tongue

  • Headache, dizziness or feeling lightheaded

  • Swollen lymph nodes

Not all children will have the same symptoms, but some emergency warning signs to be aware of that warrant immediate medical care include:

  • Extreme stomach pain

  • Trouble breathing

  • New confusion

  • Chest pain/pressure that won’t subside

  • Inability to wake up or stay awake

  • Pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips or nail beds

If you notice your child exhibiting any of those warning signs or if they seem severely sick, take them to the nearest ER or call 911.

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is now available to kiddos age 5 and older. Getting vaccinated helps prevent the spread of COVID-19 and avoid serious complications down the line.
