Top Causes of Injury in Children

Injuries are the #1 cause of death among children. Even though child injuries are preventable, more than 7,000 children die from injuries in the United States in 2019.

Some children are at higher risk than others:

  • Boys

  • Babies under the age of 1

  • Teenagers age 15-19 years

  • American Indian children

  • Alaska Native kids

  • Black children

Leading causes of unintentional child injuries include:

  • Car crashes

  • Falls

  • Suffocation

  • Drowning

  • Poisoning

  • Fires or burns

It’s not possible to protect your child from all the bumps and bruises of childhood and while the death rates have decreased by 11% from 2010-2019, injury is still the leading cause of death for children and teenagers.
